TechCrunch’s ethics died in Gaza

This is my response to this TechCrunch.uk post. it was too long to be a comment, and it was a shame to throw this away:

Mike, “Exactly how do you cover a story about a site that carries graphic imagery without illustrating what it does?”

I just want to take a moment to deal with the picture of the dead kids. This picture was taken by Eman Mohammed a Jordanian Photojournalist located in Gaza. She also published these pictures:
A kid dressed in a hamas terrorist uniform holding a gun.

How about this picture of a lady in gaza holding an AK47?

Do you prefer a picture of these 16 years old proud graduates of the Hamas militant training? (you know… the ones that are sent to luanch the missiles?)

Any of these photos could have been placed here, in this post, instead, or along with this dreadful dead kids pictures. But no! you are still claiming that you placed all three pictures that show Hamas supperters as victems.

great job. really. a true ethic behaviour.

BTW: you can take a glance of Demotix‘ top news images. Tell me kids, do you see a pattern?:

#1st place: First Day in Gaza
#2nd place: London protest against Gaza airstrikes, outside Israeli embassy
#4th place: Israeli air raid killed 5 sisters of Balosh family
#5th Gaza under the Israeli attacks (2)
#6th Widening an offensive against Hamas, Israeli aircraft pounded targets across the Gaza Strip
#7th Gaza under the Israeli attacks
#12th Israeli airstrikes widen scope against Gaza ( PART 2)
#13th Israeli airstrikes widen scope against Gaza

This site is amazing, really a true portrayal of reality, ain’t it?

I’m beginning to suspect if you weren’t to write anything at all about this site (which has a lousy GUI, a drowsy traffic, and a stupid 90’s watermark) if it wasn’t, in practice, giving you the excuse (opportunity) to put a big ass dead kids photo in the middle in order to make a subliminal point. This unethical behavioral is as appalling as the photo itself.

ולכל מי שלא הבין מאיפה הבאתי את הפוסט הזה באנגלית. אל דאגה, זה חריג וזה לא יחזור. פשוט לא יכלותי לשתוק.

The site you talk about also carries this: http://www.demotix.com/en/2008/12/15/israel-released-224-prisoners-goodwill-gesture-palestinian-president-mahmoud-abbas-1

newly released Palestinian prisoners greeted by families upon their arrival at the headquarters of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah December 15, 2008. Israel released 224 prisoners in a goodwill gesture to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday, prompting joyous family reunions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip PHOTOS BY: THAER GHANAIM

That would appear to be balance to me, but what do I know?

  2. 2 CrazyVet 30 בדצמבר 2008 בשעה 6:30

Just for the intellectual exercise sake, has anybody tried uploading a photo of qassam damage and wounded people on the Israeli side? It would be quite difficult to disprove your point after such a photo is denied.

  3. 3 אפי פוקס 30 בדצמבר 2008 בשעה 7:03

@Vet- note that most of this site’s pics a taken from established agencies… i think that when it comes to the Gaza pictures, it is almost 100% non-UGC pics. It didn’t bothered Mike.

I don’t think the site will decline any picture you’ll send and i don’t have anything specific against it. Mike’s coverege bothered me. that’s all

Totally understood, it’s completely biased and annoying. I guess I personally should be used to that by now, the Spanish media doesn’t know any other way to do things…

    Mike,

Since when did crying women carrying a child become techcrunch material?

And the header: “Direct from the streets of Gaza…”. As if you’re a non-biased reporter that resides in Israel.

And if a reader decides to press the link to Demonix, he sees “the truth”: 2/3 of the suffering in the world are in Gaza, and only because these Israelis (which is the new codename for Jews) can’t stop their violent nature.

All we want is some peace and quiet. Right now, we’ll just settle for some quiet.

i believe the content of Demotix just reflects the most recent events, naturally most of it is Gaza influenced, where else in the world hundreds of innocent civilians dies on the streets after the rocket strike

It was a stupid thing to do period. I saw the thread and it’s stupid to put photos of the recent conflict of people from either side and not expect a backlash.
Giving proof the company actually works is not needed. Words were enough.
It’s obvious people will be mad here at Israel at a one sided portrayal of a conflict.
It just invites stupid responses like there is only one bad side because the qassams don’t kill people… I guess having a rocket land at a kindergarten’s play yard and destroying some of the building as well isn’t picturesque enough since no kids were punctured by the shrapnel… I know each and every Israeli was sorry for that fact. No one died - that obviously means we are bastards defending ourselves from eight years of rockets and from even longer years of drive by shooting, suicide bombings and people getting shot by people stocking cars on the sides of hills.
By thinking that putting a proof of work of this company that no one will be outraged at the portrayal of a small part of a long conflict is pure plonker behavior if you catch my drift.
A kilometer from where I live a woman that returned from the USA got shot and killed by the side of the road - her parents had a child around 20 years old commit suicide because of a medical condition he had, and another died in the IDF.
Spotlights were placed on lamp posts in the roads that are directed at the hills so you will see if someone is waiting to kill you using an automatic weapon which is the weapon of choice nowadays.
People infiltrated towns and murdered kids in cold blood. Kids get 15 seconds to take cover and that effects their entire day and that was and is the case for 8 years now at least, so taking a shower is a hazard.
A girl in my class had her uncle and his wife killed while waiting for the bus.
Hamas is targeting civilians each and every day and mainly civilians. Your asinine decisions give people the excuse to exclaim that they are somehow just and Israel is the bad side in this.
I doubt there is a good side but what you did (Mike Butcher) is poke your finger at a giant wound that people in both sides had for dozens of years at least, and you expect people to overlook that? That is a pretty dumb move.
A little thinking before posting the article and a little NPOV wouldn’t hurt. Pictures of people suffering on both sides should have never been added to that article.

Look at the description of the picture.
This is picture took place in Tel Aviv and the signs are against the killing of animals and not related at all to what writen in there.

    blah blah blah.
Listening to outrage at a site hosting images that would rather not be seen by establishment is not ethically wrong. How do you feel when images from the holocaust are shown? Should images from the ghettos and nazi atrocities be banned as well as “unethical” in schoolbooks etc? I feel as a grandson of someone who died in some g-d forsaken man-made hell it would not be the right thing to do. I feel sorry for each israeli and palestinian that dies in these, but the feigned outrage and anger at a blog post covering this sounds rather hollow and hypocritical imho. War, no matter who the agressor or counter-agressor or whatever is inherently evil. Posting youtube clips of precision strikes and dressing up the issue in pretty wrapping as “self defense, security or whatever wont change the fact. The Jews deserve a place to call theirs, but so do other people. Pushing a nation without nationhood into the sea wont work, regardless of nation. FFS, in the end, each and everyone affected in this clusterf*ck of a situation is a human being, and even believe in the same deity whatever they may call him.
I am disappointed again with warmongers, not with israelis or palestinians or other.

  13. 13 אבים 31 בדצמבר 2008 בשעה 4:26

let’s try some more images: Little girls holding a rocket
or maybe this: Mother and son

half jew: fact is, israel pulled from gaza a year ago, but palestinians elected hammas. hammas calls for the destruction of israel.they have fired more the 8000 missiles in the past 8 years. they didn’f fire at military bases. they are shooting at civilians. would you like a missile on your house? would you not do something about it?
fact is they dont want to live beside us. they want us dead.
don’t let the facts confuse you.

  14. 14 אפי פוקס 31 בדצמבר 2008 בשעה 4:29

    @half-jewish
I don’t know what your other half is, but it seems that your half Jewish and half naive (or dumb). I’ll say it again- I’m not against showing any picture, even the dead kids picture in the original website or anywhere else. I condemn censorship and support free speech in all forms, even cheap propaganda.
If TechCruch would have existed in 1944 and published a post about the same startup, I most certainty object showing three huge pictures containing the bodies of one side of the war, weather it were UK kids, German kids or Jews. Why? (a) Because it is absolutely Irrelevant to a Tech –Blog and it deflects to post to a hole other direction and (b) It reeks as a hidden attempt to form a politic opinion upon your readers without saying it explicitly. Such behaivour is unethical and disturbing.
For example, I wouldn’t be bothered seeing a post written by Mike which says “Israelis are Nazis and murderers of children” with all of the known necrophilian pictures pumped up daily by Hamas supporters. I’ll will understand that this is Mike opinion and will debate him for the truthfulness of his arguments. The thing that disturbed me so much is the fact that Mike tried to insinuate the same subjective opinion in the disguise of a “regular startup review”. that’s BS. that’s biased. That’s unethical.
The best evidence to prove my allegations are the comments at the original post. The ones that are not relating to the picture issue – are dragged to the tempting debate about who is right, Israeli or Hamas. Tech related issues? “Gurnisht”!

Shame on you, you are all hypocrites and anti- Semites Arabs lovers, You worth then the gentiles. Don’t you remember that Jewish blood has always been cheap allover the world? . Where have everyone of them been when we were slaughtered and burned almost sixty years ago? You probably want us to disappear from earth like our enemies . Do you ask even once how our babies have been lived in the last seven years? Sorry for not letting the “right” pictures to shock you and others like you the way the Arabs do. We do not use our baby’s blood for propaganda nor using them as human shields like the Hamas. Sorry that we are not miserable as you want us to be .
